What is 9 times greater than 3?

9 times greater than 3 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 27 (since 9 x 3 = 27). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

27 is greater than 9 x 3.

But that is not true. 27 is not greater than 9 x 3. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=9 and b=3 to get this answer:

(9 + 1) x 3 = 30

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 10 times 3?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 9 times greater than 3, they mean 9 times as much as 3 which equals 27. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
