What is 9 times greater than 4?

9 times greater than 4 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 36 (since 9 x 4 = 36). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

36 is greater than 9 x 4.

But that is not true. 36 is not greater than 9 x 4. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=9 and b=4 to get this answer:

(9 + 1) x 4 = 40

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 10 times 4?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 9 times greater than 4, they mean 9 times as much as 4 which equals 36. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
