What is 4 times greater than 9?

4 times greater than 9 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 36 (since 4 x 9 = 36). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

36 is greater than 4 x 9.

But that is not true. 36 is not greater than 4 x 9. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=4 and b=9 to get this answer:

(4 + 1) x 9 = 45

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 5 times 9?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
