What is 4 times greater than 10?

4 times greater than 10 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 40 (since 4 x 10 = 40). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

40 is greater than 4 x 10.

But that is not true. 40 is not greater than 4 x 10. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=4 and b=10 to get this answer:

(4 + 1) x 10 = 50

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 5 times 10?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
