What is 3 times greater than 8?

3 times greater than 8 seems easy enough, but is it?

24 is greater than 3 x 8.

But that is not true. 24 is not greater than 3 x 8. It is the same!

(3 + 1) x 8 = 32

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 4 times 8?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
