What is 3 times greater than 9?

3 times greater than 9 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 27 (since 3 x 9 = 27). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

27 is greater than 3 x 9.

But that is not true. 27 is not greater than 3 x 9. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=3 and b=9 to get this answer:

(3 + 1) x 9 = 36

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 4 times 9?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 3 times greater than 9, they mean 3 times as much as 9 which equals 27. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
