What is 98 times greater than 50?

98 times greater than 50 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 4900 (since 98 x 50 = 4900). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

4900 is greater than 98 x 50.

But that is not true. 4900 is not greater than 98 x 50. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=98 and b=50 to get this answer:

(98 + 1) x 50 = 4950

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 99 times 50?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 98 times greater than 50, they mean 98 times as much as 50 which equals 4900. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
