What is 9 times greater than 65?

9 times greater than 65 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 585 (since 9 x 65 = 585). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

585 is greater than 9 x 65.

But that is not true. 585 is not greater than 9 x 65. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=9 and b=65 to get this answer:

(9 + 1) x 65 = 650

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 10 times 65?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 9 times greater than 65, they mean 9 times as much as 65 which equals 585. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
