What is 8 times greater than 8?
8 times greater than 8 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 64 (since 8 x 8 = 64). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
64 is greater than 8 x 8.
But that is not true. 64 is not greater than 8 x 8. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=8 and b=8 to get this answer:
(8 + 1) x 8 = 72
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 9 times 8?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 8 times greater than 8, they mean 8 times as much as 8 which equals 64. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
