What is 8 times greater than 5?
8 times greater than 5 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 40 (since 8 x 5 = 40). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
40 is greater than 8 x 5.
But that is not true. 40 is not greater than 8 x 5. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=8 and b=5 to get this answer:
(8 + 1) x 5 = 45
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 9 times 5?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 8 times greater than 5, they mean 8 times as much as 5 which equals 40. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
