What is 6 times greater than 16?
6 times greater than 16 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 96 (since 6 x 16 = 96). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
96 is greater than 6 x 16.
But that is not true. 96 is not greater than 6 x 16. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=6 and b=16 to get this answer:
(6 + 1) x 16 = 112
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 7 times 16?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 6 times greater than 16, they mean 6 times as much as 16 which equals 96. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
