What is 53 times greater than 12?
53 times greater than 12 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 636 (since 53 x 12 = 636). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
636 is greater than 53 x 12.
But that is not true. 636 is not greater than 53 x 12. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=53 and b=12 to get this answer:
(53 + 1) x 12 = 648
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 54 times 12?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 53 times greater than 12, they mean 53 times as much as 12 which equals 636. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
