What is 5 times greater than 3?

5 times greater than 3 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 15 (since 5 x 3 = 15). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

15 is greater than 5 x 3.

But that is not true. 15 is not greater than 5 x 3. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=5 and b=3 to get this answer:

(5 + 1) x 3 = 18

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 6 times 3?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 5 times greater than 3, they mean 5 times as much as 3 which equals 15. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
