What is 5 times greater than 14?
5 times greater than 14 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 70 (since 5 x 14 = 70). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
70 is greater than 5 x 14.
But that is not true. 70 is not greater than 5 x 14. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=5 and b=14 to get this answer:
(5 + 1) x 14 = 84
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 6 times 14?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 5 times greater than 14, they mean 5 times as much as 14 which equals 70. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
