What is 49 times greater than 13?

49 times greater than 13 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 637 (since 49 x 13 = 637). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

637 is greater than 49 x 13.

But that is not true. 637 is not greater than 49 x 13. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=49 and b=13 to get this answer:

(49 + 1) x 13 = 650

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 50 times 13?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 49 times greater than 13, they mean 49 times as much as 13 which equals 637. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
