What is 48 times greater than 32?

48 times greater than 32 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 1536 (since 48 x 32 = 1536). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

1536 is greater than 48 x 32.

But that is not true. 1536 is not greater than 48 x 32. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=48 and b=32 to get this answer:

(48 + 1) x 32 = 1568

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 49 times 32?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 48 times greater than 32, they mean 48 times as much as 32 which equals 1536. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
