What is 45 times greater than 34?
45 times greater than 34 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 1530 (since 45 x 34 = 1530). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
1530 is greater than 45 x 34.
But that is not true. 1530 is not greater than 45 x 34. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=45 and b=34 to get this answer:
(45 + 1) x 34 = 1564
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 46 times 34?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 45 times greater than 34, they mean 45 times as much as 34 which equals 1530. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
