What is 45 times greater than 10?
45 times greater than 10 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 450 (since 45 x 10 = 450). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
450 is greater than 45 x 10.
But that is not true. 450 is not greater than 45 x 10. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=45 and b=10 to get this answer:
(45 + 1) x 10 = 460
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 46 times 10?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 45 times greater than 10, they mean 45 times as much as 10 which equals 450. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
