What is 43 times greater than 16?

43 times greater than 16 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 688 (since 43 x 16 = 688). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

688 is greater than 43 x 16.

But that is not true. 688 is not greater than 43 x 16. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=43 and b=16 to get this answer:

(43 + 1) x 16 = 704

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 44 times 16?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 43 times greater than 16, they mean 43 times as much as 16 which equals 688. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
