What is 42 times greater than 10?
42 times greater than 10 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 420 (since 42 x 10 = 420). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
420 is greater than 42 x 10.
But that is not true. 420 is not greater than 42 x 10. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=42 and b=10 to get this answer:
(42 + 1) x 10 = 430
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 43 times 10?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 42 times greater than 10, they mean 42 times as much as 10 which equals 420. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
