What is 4 times greater than 3?
4 times greater than 3 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 12 (since 4 x 3 = 12). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
12 is greater than 4 x 3.
But that is not true. 12 is not greater than 4 x 3. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=4 and b=3 to get this answer:
(4 + 1) x 3 = 15
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 5 times 3?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 4 times greater than 3, they mean 4 times as much as 3 which equals 12. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
