What is 4 times greater than 13?

4 times greater than 13 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 52 (since 4 x 13 = 52). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

52 is greater than 4 x 13.

But that is not true. 52 is not greater than 4 x 13. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=4 and b=13 to get this answer:

(4 + 1) x 13 = 65

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 5 times 13?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 4 times greater than 13, they mean 4 times as much as 13 which equals 52. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
