What is 39 times greater than 15?

39 times greater than 15 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 585 (since 39 x 15 = 585). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

585 is greater than 39 x 15.

But that is not true. 585 is not greater than 39 x 15. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=39 and b=15 to get this answer:

(39 + 1) x 15 = 600

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 40 times 15?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 39 times greater than 15, they mean 39 times as much as 15 which equals 585. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
