What is 38 times greater than 80?

38 times greater than 80 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 3040 (since 38 x 80 = 3040). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

3040 is greater than 38 x 80.

But that is not true. 3040 is not greater than 38 x 80. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=38 and b=80 to get this answer:

(38 + 1) x 80 = 3120

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 39 times 80?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 38 times greater than 80, they mean 38 times as much as 80 which equals 3040. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
