What is 35 times greater than 16?

35 times greater than 16 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 560 (since 35 x 16 = 560). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

560 is greater than 35 x 16.

But that is not true. 560 is not greater than 35 x 16. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=35 and b=16 to get this answer:

(35 + 1) x 16 = 576

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 36 times 16?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 35 times greater than 16, they mean 35 times as much as 16 which equals 560. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
