What is 31 times greater than 58?

31 times greater than 58 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 1798 (since 31 x 58 = 1798). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

1798 is greater than 31 x 58.

But that is not true. 1798 is not greater than 31 x 58. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=31 and b=58 to get this answer:

(31 + 1) x 58 = 1856

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 32 times 58?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 31 times greater than 58, they mean 31 times as much as 58 which equals 1798. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
