What is 30 times greater than 50?
30 times greater than 50 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 1500 (since 30 x 50 = 1500). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
1500 is greater than 30 x 50.
But that is not true. 1500 is not greater than 30 x 50. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=30 and b=50 to get this answer:
(30 + 1) x 50 = 1550
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 31 times 50?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 30 times greater than 50, they mean 30 times as much as 50 which equals 1500. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
