What is 30 times greater than 47?

30 times greater than 47 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 1410 (since 30 x 47 = 1410). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

1410 is greater than 30 x 47.

But that is not true. 1410 is not greater than 30 x 47. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=30 and b=47 to get this answer:

(30 + 1) x 47 = 1457

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 31 times 47?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 30 times greater than 47, they mean 30 times as much as 47 which equals 1410. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
