What is 3 times greater than 3?

3 times greater than 3 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 9 (since 3 x 3 = 9). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

9 is greater than 3 x 3.

But that is not true. 9 is not greater than 3 x 3. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=3 and b=3 to get this answer:

(3 + 1) x 3 = 12

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 4 times 3?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
