What is 25 times greater than 40?

25 times greater than 40 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 1000 (since 25 x 40 = 1000). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

1000 is greater than 25 x 40.

But that is not true. 1000 is not greater than 25 x 40. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=25 and b=40 to get this answer:

(25 + 1) x 40 = 1040

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 26 times 40?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 25 times greater than 40, they mean 25 times as much as 40 which equals 1000. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
