What is 22 times greater than 5?
22 times greater than 5 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 110 (since 22 x 5 = 110). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
110 is greater than 22 x 5.
But that is not true. 110 is not greater than 22 x 5. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=22 and b=5 to get this answer:
(22 + 1) x 5 = 115
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 23 times 5?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 22 times greater than 5, they mean 22 times as much as 5 which equals 110. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
