What is 22 times greater than 12?
22 times greater than 12 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 264 (since 22 x 12 = 264). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
264 is greater than 22 x 12.
But that is not true. 264 is not greater than 22 x 12. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=22 and b=12 to get this answer:
(22 + 1) x 12 = 276
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 23 times 12?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 22 times greater than 12, they mean 22 times as much as 12 which equals 264. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
