What is 21 times greater than 29?
21 times greater than 29 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 609 (since 21 x 29 = 609). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
609 is greater than 21 x 29.
But that is not true. 609 is not greater than 21 x 29. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=21 and b=29 to get this answer:
(21 + 1) x 29 = 638
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 22 times 29?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 21 times greater than 29, they mean 21 times as much as 29 which equals 609. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
