What is 21 times greater than 16?

21 times greater than 16 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 336 (since 21 x 16 = 336). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

336 is greater than 21 x 16.

But that is not true. 336 is not greater than 21 x 16. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=21 and b=16 to get this answer:

(21 + 1) x 16 = 352

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 22 times 16?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 21 times greater than 16, they mean 21 times as much as 16 which equals 336. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
