What is 20 times greater than 11?
20 times greater than 11 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 220 (since 20 x 11 = 220). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
220 is greater than 20 x 11.
But that is not true. 220 is not greater than 20 x 11. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=20 and b=11 to get this answer:
(20 + 1) x 11 = 231
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 21 times 11?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 20 times greater than 11, they mean 20 times as much as 11 which equals 220. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
