What is 2 times greater than 9?

2 times greater than 9 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 18 (since 2 x 9 = 18). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

18 is greater than 2 x 9.

But that is not true. 18 is not greater than 2 x 9. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=2 and b=9 to get this answer:

(2 + 1) x 9 = 27

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 3 times 9?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
