What is 2 times greater than 6?

2 times greater than 6 seems easy enough, but is it?

Let's assume the answer = 12 (since 2 x 6 = 12). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:

12 is greater than 2 x 6.

But that is not true. 12 is not greater than 2 x 6. It is the same!

To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=2 and b=6 to get this answer:

(2 + 1) x 6 = 18

But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 3 times 6?" instead of saying "times greater than?"

We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.

It seems that when many people write 2 times greater than 6, they mean 2 times as much as 6 which equals 12. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
