What is 17 times greater than 11?
17 times greater than 11 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 187 (since 17 x 11 = 187). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
187 is greater than 17 x 11.
But that is not true. 187 is not greater than 17 x 11. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=17 and b=11 to get this answer:
(17 + 1) x 11 = 198
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 18 times 11?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 17 times greater than 11, they mean 17 times as much as 11 which equals 187. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
