What is 13 times greater than 50?
13 times greater than 50 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 650 (since 13 x 50 = 650). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
650 is greater than 13 x 50.
But that is not true. 650 is not greater than 13 x 50. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=13 and b=50 to get this answer:
(13 + 1) x 50 = 700
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 14 times 50?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 13 times greater than 50, they mean 13 times as much as 50 which equals 650. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
