What is 13 times greater than 46?
13 times greater than 46 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 598 (since 13 x 46 = 598). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
598 is greater than 13 x 46.
But that is not true. 598 is not greater than 13 x 46. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=13 and b=46 to get this answer:
(13 + 1) x 46 = 644
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 14 times 46?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 13 times greater than 46, they mean 13 times as much as 46 which equals 598. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
