What is 10 times greater than 8?
10 times greater than 8 seems easy enough, but is it?
Let's assume the answer = 80 (since 10 x 8 = 80). Then shouldn't this statement be true?:
80 is greater than 10 x 8.
But that is not true. 80 is not greater than 10 x 8. It is the same!
To make it greater, we could make make a formula like (a+1)b where a=10 and b=8 to get this answer:
(10 + 1) x 8 = 88
But if that is the case, why not simply say "What is 11 times 8?" instead of saying "times greater than?"
We do not think there is a correct answer, because the question can be misinterpreted.
It seems that when many people write 10 times greater than 8, they mean 10 times as much as 8 which equals 80. We recommend that you ask them to clarify what they mean.
